Music Curriculum Vision

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

At St Matthew’s we all learn to share the universal language of music which helps our students increase their self-confidence, creativity and gain a sense of achievement. Students can grow in confidence as they perform, listen to, sing and improve their emotional wellbeing through the wonders and enjoyment of music.

Supported through the Charanga Music School our music lessons will engage and inspire students to develop a love of music.  Our curriculum enables students from all year levels to participate in performing music, playing tuned and untuned instruments, and develop improvisation and composition skills. By the time students are in KS2 they will develop an understanding of the inter-related dimensions of music and will develop confidence and control of their musical abilities. We provide students with many opportunities to develop their creative thinking skills as they listen to and evaluate music across a range of genres, time periods and styles; including the works of famous composers and musicians.

There are a range of possibilities that students can explore through music that helps support their progression in literacy, numeracy and science. Understanding the lyrics, rhythm, pitch of songs and the way sounds works can be communicated and explored across the wider school curriculum. Students at St Matthew’s can also choose to challenge themselves further through extra-curricular guitar and piano lessons which are taught by qualified music teachers.

Students will use their voices to expressly and creatively sing songs and chants as they appreciate the styles and broad history of music which helps them to understand their place in the world and closely links with our school values.  Singing is also an important part of our school’s worship which helps students to express their Christian faith. We provide many opportunities for students to perform at events across the year such as during Class Worships, Christmas Carols and Easter concerts.
